About the Dan Spoon

Large wooden sculpted ladles are of significant importance to the Dan community. During masquerade ceremonies, one woman is given the honor of wa ke de, or “at feasts acting woman”. Only a woman of great status and honor would be given this title. Her responsibilities are now to host, organize and cook a great feast accompanying the masquerade. Once the honored woman is announced, she is gifted a figural wooden spoon and is paraded through the village. Spoons are also thought to embody spirits like masks are for men.
