Large Horned Igbo Mask from Nigeria

Tribe: Igbo                    Country: Nigeria                     Object: Face Mask                    Height: 23.5″

Thousands of masks can be found from the Igbo people. Masks are thought to be incarnate spirits of the dead. These masks are used during sacred rituals, funerals, initiation and a number of other social gatherings. Some masks may only be worn once or for one type of ceremony, while others may used for generations and at multiple functions. Because themes of these gatherings changes so frequently, it is difficult to pinpoint the purpose of one specific mask except for the most well known.
