The Igbo people participate in many ceremonial functions throughout the year. During these ceremonies, dancers will wear masks that are thought to be incarnate spirits of the dead. Thousands of masks can be found that have been used by the tribe for these observances. Because the themes for these gatherings change so frequently, it is difficult to pinpoint the purpose of one specific mask except for the most well known.
